Piper Elizabeth Chapman is the main protagonist of Orange is the New Black, serving as the main protagonist of Season One, Three, Four & Six. She is a former inmate at Litchfield Penitentiary before being sent to Maximum Security after the Riot in Litchfield Penitentiary that occurred in Season Five, from which she got released early. She is the "prison wife" of Alex Vause as they aren't legally married. She is portrayed by Taylor Schilling. And proudly bisexual.

Piper's character is based on the author of Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, Piper Kerman.

Personality[]

At the outset of the series, Piper is portrayed as a relatively innocent woman who aims to remain on her best behavior and avoid conflict with the other inmates while quietly serving her time. However, as the series progresses and she spends more time in prison, Piper's true personality begins to surface. She is revealed to be cruel, selfish, spoiled, sanctimonious, and willing to manipulate others to achieve her desires. Flashbacks reveal that Piper has always possessed a selfish side. She breaks up with Alex Vause and abandons her, despite the fact that Alex discovers that her mother has died just moments after their breakup ("Tall Men with Feelings"). The series repeatedly reveals both good and bad sides of Piper. Prison changes Piper, stripping away her innocence and revealing a darker, more ruthless side as she becomes increasingly manipulative and morally compromised to survive. At the same time, it makes her more resilient and self-aware, forcing her to confront her privilege and adapt to the harsh realities of her new environment.

Alex, who arguably knows Piper best, repeatedly observes—particularly in Season Five—that Piper struggles with not being in control, revealing her tendency to be a 'control freak.' This is evident when Piper joins Taystee, Black Cindy, Watson, and Alison Abdullah during the prison riot to assist with negotiations, a move Alex suggests is motivated by her need to regain control. Later, Piper regrets this decision, berating herself for prioritizing the riot over spending time with Alex.

In Season Six, Piper is highly protective and ready to do anything to keep Alex out of trouble.

Larry characterizes Piper as someone who craves excitement and adventure, suggesting that she doesn't truly love Alex but is instead attracted to what Alex represents. Piper rejects this assessment, asserting that Larry no longer understands her.

Physical Appearance[]

Piper is a young Caucasian woman with blue eyes and blonde hair that reaches a little under her shoulder, although she kept her hair waist-length and mane-like during her early-mid twenties. She is 5'8 and has a slim build, with three tattoos on her body and a prominent brand on her left arm (although it is shown on her right arm in Season Six). Her first tattoo is of a fish on the nape of her neck, which she got done in her mid-twenties to represent magic, beauty and appreciating beauty. She got it done on the back of her neck because the tattoo isn't for her, it's for other people - and more specifically, Alex ("Tattoo You"). Her second tattoo, courtesy of Stella Carlin, is on her left arm and is written in white ink, saying "Trust No Bitch". Her last tattoo is of an infinity sign on her left side, which she gave herself (leading to an infection). In "It Sounded Nicer in My Head", she is branded on her arm by the Spanish Harlem with a Nazi symbol, which is later fixed in "Friends in Low Places" by Red to look like a window.

Since Piper is of taller height and quite thin, with blue eyes and blonde hair - typical of the perfect female stereotype - her nickname in Litchfield quickly becomes "Blondie". She also has other nicknames due to her appearance, such as "Taylor Swift," "Lindsay Lohan," "Dandelion," "Blonde Katy Perry", "College" and "JonBénet".

Piper typically wears a white t-shirt or thermal under her jumpsuit and notes that the prison-issued canvas slip-ons resemble trendy Toms ('I Wasn't Ready'). Throughout the series, she dons three distinct types of jumpsuits: the orange jumpsuit for new inmates in Season 1, the tan jumpsuit worn during her time at Litchfield from Season 1 to Season 5, and the navy jumpsuit of the C-Block during her Maximum Security stint in Season 6. Exceptions to this are seen in flashbacks and during her furlough, where she adopts a professional, preppy style, and during the bed bug infestation, when she wears a standard blue nurse uniform along with the rest of the inmates.

In "Who Knows Better Than I", Piper's left front tooth is chipped after Badison trips her when Piper tells her she wants to go to Medical in hopes of finding Alex. The tooth is later returned to her in "Mischief Mischief" by CO Copeland in exchange for her instigating a fight with Ruiz, and Alex later glues it back on with super glue.

Biography[]

Childhood[]

Piper was born on June 7, 1981, at 11:42 am in Connecticut. She is the middle child, with an older and younger brother. Her older brother, Danny, has been referred to as "the perfect son" but has not appeared in the series. Her younger brother, Cal, was generally regarded as the "black sheep" of the family before her incarceration. Piper was a 'daddy's girl' and didn't break rules her dad would say, for example, not jumping out the back of the bus.

Piper's parents were obsessed with appearances and projected this onto their children. As a child, Piper discovered that her father was having an affair and told her mother, only to have her mother completely ignore what she said. She was able to somewhat make sense of this with the help of her grandmother. She graduated from Smith College, having double-majored in communications and comparative literature, ("Ching Chong Chang") but spent some years after graduation traveling and seeking to find herself. During college, she met her best friend, Polly Harper, and the two years later started a soap company called PoPi.

At some point, Piper mentions she took a cheese class. ("Mischief Mischief")

Life with Alex[]

Looking for a job after graduating from college, Piper met edgy Alex Vause at a bar. Though she had never dated a woman before, they quickly began a relationship. In love and thirsting for adventure, Piper was not bothered by the fact that her girlfriend was an international drug smuggler. They traveled the world together in high style, and on one occasion Piper agreed to traffic a suitcase full of $50,000 in drug money to Belgium, immediately regretting it. Despite her discomfort in committing criminal acts herself, she was content to quit her job as a waitress just to travel with Alex to places as far-reaching as Bali, Cambodia, and Belgium, living off the enticing incentives of the global drug trade.

Eventually, Alex was desperate and begged Piper to traffic again. Piper refused, and they broke up. As Piper was due to leave to catch a flight, Alex had a phone call saying her mother had died. She begged Piper to stay with her for emotional support through the funeral, even just as a friend, but Piper refused and caught her flight anyway. Piper moved on from the break-up much more quickly than Alex, who was simultaneously heartbroken by both their break-up and the death of her mother and eventually turned to heroin to try and cope.

Piper introduced Alex to Polly while they were dating, but her best friend openly did not like her. Piper did not introduce Alex to her family, though, as they were all later surprised to find out she'd been in a same-sex relationship when she sat them down to explain the circumstances of her sentencing years later.

Upon breaking up with Alex, Piper is seen in a tattoo shop, getting a tattoo of a fish in the back of her neck, which symbolizes beauty. The artist wonders why she didn't get it somewhere she can see it, to which Piper replies that it's not for her. She talks about her ex and mentions a metaphor of not letting seasickness ruin the (beauty of the) beach.

Life with Larry[]

Years later, Piper met Larry Bloom, a mutual friend of Polly and Polly's eventual husband, Pete. After chastising a homeless person for not taking care of his dog to her satisfaction, Piper was bitten by the beast. Using her extra key, she stumbles into Polly and Pete's apartment to find Larry house-sitting. Larry was instantly attracted to her and helped her get cleaned up, and they unexpectedly bonded. They jokingly wondered why Polly and Pete never thought to set them up before, but it quickly became apparent that no one really thinks that they're perfect together - not even them. Before finding out about the trial, Piper and Larry are in a tattoo parlor as Larry is getting his buttocks tattooed. Piper suggests that she should get a tattoo of the 'Chinese character of tranquility' he makes a joke that Chinese people couldn't pronounce that word. They talk about superheroes and Piper mocks him for saying "spiderman" instead of "spiderman" She suggests that she should get a yin-yang as it is revealed that Larry is getting the Kool-Aid Man, who he says he is a good superhero. Piper says Larry's mother will kill him, to which he responds his mother doesn't see that part of his body anymore. Piper decides not to get a tattoo and lies that the fish symbolizes Larry, a Pisces. Later Piper is in a bathroom, drunk, shouting Larry and she rings Alex and she goes to voicemail as Piper says that her boyfriend got a Kool-Aid Man tattoo and mocks Alex's tattoo. She is clearly sad as she states she still thinks about Alex. She asks if Alex misses her and she says she misses Alex. She hangs up.

After the charges come through, just two years shy of the statute of limitations, Larry vowed to stick by her and they sat down together to tell her family. Piper explained to her horrified mother that she was a lesbian at the time, but is not anymore, and was horrified herself to admit to her grandmother that she wasn't really into what she was doing for the money.

At some point before her incarceration but after she had been indicted, Piper had a pregnancy scare. She was upset when the test came back negative, even though she knew it would have been a bad thing to be pregnant in her current situation.

S6 x 03 Piper

Spending a nice day at the beach to mark her remaining days of freedom, Piper was reading books about getting through prison when Larry unexpectedly proposed. Although she was surprised that he would do this before she left, he insisted that he had to lock their relationship down. She tearfully accepted his proposal and agreed to get married after she gets out of prison.

Series Beginning[]

The day before she has to leave for prison, Larry, Pete, and Polly throw a farewell party for her. She apologizes to Polly because she is going to miss her baby shower, and the two joke about how Piper is going to keep her eyebrows maintained behind bars. Later that night, she and Larry decide to have sex one final time before she leaves. Just as they begin, she excuses herself to go use the toilet and Larry tells her that she is beautiful. In the bathroom, she sobs, the realization that she is leaving for prison hits her. When she comes back out, she returns Larry’s compliment and gets back into bed. When he notices that she has been crying she tells him to forget about it and just have sex with her ("I Wasn't Ready"). The next morning, Piper and Larry drive to Litchfield in order for her to surrender.

Life at Litchfield[]

PiperChapmanS1

At the time of her incarceration, Piper is 31 years old.

Season One[]

Trying not to get on anyone's bad side, she had a habit of saying the wrong things at the wrong time. Red, for instance, is the first person who suffers from her thoughtless words and in retaliation refuses to give Chapman any meals, as she is the head cook of the prison's kitchen. Meanwhile, Piper finds a way to make it up to Red for insulting her food by creating a lotion to help with her back problems. Her counselor Healy soon takes an interest in Piper because she has a fiance.

Piper asks Larry to ask his father Howard, her lawyer, to disclose if it truly was Alex who named her. Although Alex did name her as an accessory, Howard convinces Larry to lie to Piper and say it was not her in order to prevent Piper from doing something rash and extending her sentence. Thinking she has been a jerk to Alex for ignoring her, Piper makes up with Alex and they become friends. When she and Alex dance at Taystee's farewell party in a "sexually provocative" way, Pennsatucky fetches Healy who, feeling betrayed by Piper and being hugely homophobic, sends her to the SHU.

When Piper gets out, she and Alex have sex. What they don't know is that while Piper was in the SHU, Healy called Larry to tell him that Piper was cheating on him with Alex. As Pennsatucky starts to act up as a God-chosen healer, Alex starts to make her think she could really heal, along with the help of Watson, Big Boo and Piper, which ends in attacking a disabled girl trying to "heal" her and her being transferred to Psych. Piper starts to feel guilty hearing from Suzanne how horrible Psych is and convinces Caputo to re-transfer her, as she would be to blame.

After Larry ignores her for a couple of weeks, Piper manages to get a hold of him and discovers he knows that she cheated on him. In anger, Larry tells her that Alex did name her. Realizing that Larry and her have little chance of making up and that Alex is the only one she has, Piper acts forgiving towards Alex, much to her surprise. Meanwhile, in an effort to make up with Pennsatucky after getting her sent to Psych, Piper agrees to be baptized. When facing the laundry tub meant to be her baptismal pool, Piper can't go through with it. Pennsatucky feels disrespected and decides that she needs to kill Piper. She, Leanne, and Angie threaten her in the showers with a razor blade melted into a toothbrush. Before they are able to harm her, a guard yells at them to leave because it's not their assigned bathroom. Eventually, at the Christmas Pageant, she leaves to go outside, where Pennsatucky corners her and attempts to stab her with a sharpened wooden crucifix. Although Healy sees them fighting and hears Piper screaming for help, he ignores them and leaves. Using Taystee, Poussey, Black Cindy, and Janae's fighting advice, she eventually disarms and beats up Pennsatucky. We see Piper completely lose herself and punch a floored Pennsatucky again and again, blood and broken teeth flying onto the snow around them.

Season Two[]

Season Two opens with Piper being ushered out of the SHU as guards ignore her furtive questions. She is shoved into a van as she is transported with several other inmates to an unknown location. As the van finally comes to a stop, Piper realizes that they are going on an airplane. Guards continue to ignore her panicked questions. She is forced onto the plane and is seated next to Lolly Whitehill, who she shocks by graphically telling the story of how she beat up Pennsatucky. As the plane lands, she realizes that they have landed in Chicago and she comes to her own conclusion that she must have been transported for beating and possibly murdering Pennsatucky. She arrives at the Metropolitan Detention Center, a maximum-security facility, and attempts to adjust to her new surroundings. She is bunked with four women; Araceli, Joyce, Mazall and Hill and immediately incurs their wrath by inadvertently stepping on the pet cockroach that they have trained to carry cigarettes. She sees Alex in the yard one day and persuades a male inmate to bring the two together by giving him her panties. This incident would later serve as the basis for her prison-panties business in Season Three.

Season one piper chapman

Piper discovers she is in Chicago to testify in the trial of Alex's drug boss, Kubra Balik, and the stay is temporary. Alex forcefully pushes Piper to lie about knowing Kubra, because Alex fears he will exact revenge. However, Piper wishes to tell the truth. We see several flashbacks from Piper's childhood noting her complicated past. Piper meets with her lawyer, Larry's father Howard, who strongly advises her to tell the truth. In the van on the way to the trial, Alex pushes one last time for Piper to lie about knowing Kubra, saying she (Alex) will be screwed over if they don't tell the same story. Piper gives in and lies under oath at the trial. Afterwards, Howard washes his hands of her. Alex then informs Piper that although Alex planned to lie she decided to tell the truth, as it "all happened so fast," which leaves Piper in contempt of court; Piper now faces perjury charges and additional time. Piper shouts angrily at Alex, who is being led out of prison, ostensibly to be released.

Piper isn't seen again until Episode 3 where she returns to Litchfield. She is put back in the same room as when she first arrived. At lunch, she talks with Nicky about Alex, her paranoia that everyone keeps looking at her, and they both confess they missed each other. Piper comforts Brook Soso, a new inmate because her nightly crying was disturbing the sleep of other inmates. She refuses to call Brook by her last name Soso because "she can't say it with a straight face." The next day, she threatens Brook for lying in her bed, claiming that she is "A lone wolf who rips out the throat of sheep," shutting down Brook's friendly advances and leaving her stunned at the harshness of her words. Piper is also seen interacting with Suzanne Warren, thanking her profusely for making it look like a fair fight against Pennsatucky (we see a flashback that explains whilst Piper was beating Pennsatucky, Suzanne exited the building in a psychotic state and punched Piper, believing that Piper was her mother. She then left, and Piper and Pennsatucky were discovered lying in the snow unconscious). Under the influence of Vee, Suzanne refuses Piper's offer of seeing the movie together, leaving Piper confused as Suzanne struts off with Vee.

When Piper finds out that her paternal grandmother is sick and dying, she is very upset and immediately requests furlough, though she and everyone know that the chances of it getting approved are very unlikely. While waiting to hear from Healy about it, Piper develops plans for a Prison Newsletter, which she uses as a cover for the administration while she investigates the prison and Fig's corruption — embezzling money for her husband Jason's political campaign — for reporter Andrew Nance. She works on the newsletter called The Big House Bugle with Morello, Daya, and Flaca, and it is well-accepted, even by Healy, Caputo and the guards.

Unexpectedly, her furlough is approved, and while she receives some backlash for it and briefly plans to turn it down to appease the other inmates, Piper decides to go through with it. However, it is a day too late as her grandmother passes shortly before her furlough is even approved. Given 48 hours of freedom, albeit restricted by rules, Piper meets with Cal and Larry. At her grandmother's wake, Piper is so disturbed by the things she heard from her family's friends and her father, who, until then, has not visited her in prison. She tries to have sex with Larry in the bathroom until he tells her that he has slept with someone she knew. The pair decides to finally, officially end things. At the funeral the next day, her brother marries his girlfriend Neri in a surprise ceremony.

Given a fresh outlook on her situation through insights from comments people have made about her (her new and old self and who she really was), Piper leaves the funeral (and wedding reception) and has a drink out on the street. She then goes to Red's shop in Queens and disappointingly sees that the store has closed down and is on a lease. When she returns to Litchfield the next day, she lies to Red about this so as not to worry her further.

Upon her return, while she initially does not mind and is not interested in the details, she finds herself wondering who Larry slept with. She calls him and asks through his voicemail, and her best friend Polly later comes to visit. During their brief conversation, Piper immediately becomes suspicious about Polly's statements and, though she barely probed, figures it out eventually. As a way of telling Polly that she knows, she has her new sister-in-law Neri leave a burning bag filled with poop on Polly's doorstep — a prank Polly explained to her years prior, and so Polly instantly knows it came from her. After Polly and Larry decide to be together, they come to visit Piper in prison to ask for her blessing, which she refuses to give.

Meanwhile, Piper reconnects with Alex (despite her betrayal), who has been sending Piper numerous letters, presumably to explain the situation in Chicago. Despite Nicky's coaxing, Piper refuses to read any of them and is seen throwing away a Valentine's Day card from her. However, Larry sleeping with her best friend causes her to reconsider, as she opens one of Alex's letters after figuring out that it was Polly who slept with her ex-fiancé. Although we aren't shown the contents of the letter, Piper later asks Healy to add her to her call list. When she finally makes contact, she is quick to accuse Alex and straight forward, but later becomes concerned about her ex-girlfriend's welfare when she finds out that Kubra has been released due to a suspicious mistrial, and that he could be looking for revenge after Alex turned on him. At the end of their call, Piper adds Alex to her visitation list.

Possibly because of her newsletter, her connection with Andrew and Larry, who had shared multiple stories regarding Piper in the prison, Fig targets her and plans to have her transferred to Virginia, though Healy insists that her and a dozen other girls being shuffled off is random and simply due to Litchfield's overpopulation. During a blackout at the prison during the tropical storm Wanda, Piper takes advantage of Fig's absence and sneaks into her office, only to be caught by Caputo as she is just about to leave with a folder of invoices. Caputo has her sent to SHU but eventually comes to her, asking for details on the case being built against her. She promises to help him take down Fig, and even get him in charge of the prison if he stops her transfer to Virginia. He agrees and immediately gives the files to the warden, and Caputo becomes the assistant warden, replacing Fig.

Alex and Piper first see each other in person since Chicago when Alex visits her. Alex tells Piper about sleeping with a gun due to her paranoia, and the name of her probation officer as a joke—information Piper later uses and tells Polly to pass on the message to Alex's parole officer, David Crockett, to get Alex sent back to prison for violating her parole to keep her safe and prevent her from attempting to begin dealing again or skip town.

Season Three[]

In Season Three, she is shown at her darkest and most manipulative side when she makes a business which sells worn undergarments by inmates who have to wear them for 2 days at a time or more, sneak them to a guard, who drops them off to Cal, who sells them online, then keep the money for herself. She meets Stella Carlin with whom she becomes a 'friend with benefits', and eventually a business partner after Alex wants out of her panty business. Soon, Piper's panty wearers, led by Flaca, realize how much money they're missing out on and refuse to work until they get a fair wage. After taking advice from Red, Piper realizes she needs to pay them. When looking for a phone to get a cash card to keep her business running, she finds a variety of illegal contraband, including a shiv made out of hardened candy, a lighter, cigarettes, and weed. After making the arrangements to put money in their accounts, Piper collects all the panty-wearers and tells them the good news. She then fires Flaca to set an example. Later, Flaca begs for her job back by truthfully telling Piper that her mother is sick, leading Piper to rehire her at a low starting rate. However, when Cal tells her that all her money is gone, Piper automatically blames Flaca because she was in the library when Piper was using her phone to pay the inmates. She quickly finds out that it is not Flaca, but instead Stella Carlin, who stole her money in one desperate move because she was getting out in a few days. Piper then collects all the contraband she found during the search for the cell phone and stashes them in Stella's bunk. She also stashes the screwdriver she uses in her fight with Pennsatucky in "Can't Fix Crazy", calmly remarking to Boo, "Sorry about your dildo, Boo; the cost of doing business. I'll make it up to you.", to which Boo replies, "Damn, Chapman, That is some stone-cold shit". Piper then leaves whilst saying: "I don't fuck around. Let the people know".

At the end of this season, Piper's already been in Litchfield for about 9 months and has still 6 to 12 months left.

Season Four[]

After sending Stella to the max at the end of Season Three, Piper believes that all the other inmates are now scared of her and develops a hyper-inflated ego as a result. Flaca tells one of the new inmates, Ouija, that Piper is "la jefa", meaning "the boss", although it is clear she was trying to get Piper targeted. Various instances of Piper getting special treatment from the prisoners (extra toast, the first priority at the phones) supports this, though Piper seems somewhat unsure of how to handle her status. Red tells her she needs protection, as an uncovered leader figure is just a target for attacks. She hires a new inmate, and bunkmate, Stephanie Hapakuka, to follow her around at all times, which Stephanie accepts begrudgingly.

After Ruiz elevates herself to the leader of the new Dominican inmates, she starts a rival panty-selling business and starts taking Piper's workers from her, enticing them with better deals. A disconcerted Piper talks to Piscatella about "gang activity", and he encourages her to start a neighborhood watch type-group. At the first meeting, racist white inmates congregate and quickly form a White Power Group, horrifying Piper; however, she goes along with it for a time to protect her back. The White Power Group finds out about Ruiz's secret business and Piper is scared it will be traced back to her own business. She plants panties in Ruiz's bunk to frame her, and, instead of Ruiz being punished by what Piper thought would be a short time in the SHU, she ends up being responsible for another 3-5 years added to Ruiz's sentence. A furious and devastated Ruiz promises to "bury" Piper for what she did.

After Ruiz's panty-business is revealed, the COs start a humiliating campaign of stopping inmates and forcing them to drop their pants to see whether they are wearing Whispers merchandise. The campaign is made all the more scandalous when the COs choose to target only persons of color. One day, Piper is with Hapakuka and Big Boo when they are stopped with all other surrounding inmates. They panic, as all three are "wearing". Piper and Big Boo are waved through, but Hapakuka, a native Hawaiian, is forced to strip. Piper looks on guiltily, but her new allegiance with the White Power Group coupled with Stephanie's exposure leads her to abandon Stephanie, saying "I can't help you, but I'm rooting for you". Stephanie is left completely alone and vulnerable, as she is known by Ruiz's group as a white-supremacist sympathizer due to the fact that she worked as security for Piper.

Slowly, Piper becomes more and more disillusioned and disgusted with the behavior of the White Power Group and distances herself from them. However, her old friends have in turn distanced themselves from her due to the company she was keeping. At Nicky's welcome back party, Piper tries to talk to her old friends but, whilst they don't snub her directly, they act disinterested in her and make it clear that they don't approve of her behavior. Piper approaches Stephanie and tries to apologize for abandoning her. Stephanie tells it like it is, but acts like she may forgive Piper, asking if they can go somewhere quieter to talk. She leads Piper into a walk-in cupboard leading to the kitchen. Whilst in there, Ruiz's girls rush Piper, and Stephanie stares coldly after her, echoing Piper's earlier words: I can't help you, but I'm rooting for you.

Ruiz's girls drag her into the kitchen and towards the stove where a burner is lit. Ruiz punches Piper, then brands Piper's arm with a swastika using a kitchen implement held in the burner as revenge.

Piper is traumatized and has trouble functioning properly for days afterwards. Red notices her arm bleeding and demands to see the wound. She, Alex and Norma take Piper back to the kitchen and burn the swastika into a window shape.

Realizing that she had been trying to "win at prison" and was constantly "getting involved in other people's shit", Piper is noticeably changed after her branding, and becomes a much calmer person with a nicer attitude, also reconsidering her recent dismissive behavior towards Alex, which she apologizes profusely for during her re-branding. Piper becomes aware of the injustices in the way the guards are treating inmates and eventually joins Blanca Flores atop a cafeteria table, which she is ordered to stand on for days. Piper helps Alex process her guilt for having to kill Aydin Bayat and helps her recover the confessional notes she left lying around the prison. They reconnect romantically once they learn how to communicate again. When the rest of the inmate's riot after Poussey Washington's death, Piper and Alex do not join them, they run back to their dorm.

Season Five[]

At the start of the season, she tries to stay out of trouble and avoid the rioting. Her and Alex 'adopt' and 'train' Linda Ferguson on how to be a real inmate. They eventually end up liking her and take her around and she even sits with them, Linda leaves with Big Boo. Piper realized that Linda knows about Aydin and so, she interrupts the talent show and threatens Linda, who acts as if she is being followed by Piper to the other inmates (when it is opposite). ("Litchfield's Got Talent") Piper and Alex try to live a peaceful life outside, developing a 'dirt home' on a digger. Piper does not like the 'clutter' that Alex has placed and also complains of Alex's uneven tears on her top saying that she needs symmetry. Alex became a leader of the community after her speech. This confuses Piper who discovers that Alex hinted that she killed Aydin. Piper moved into a separate 'guest room' near the digger in protest. However, Piper becomes bored and wants to become involved in the riot much to the annoyance of Alex, and eventually teams up with Taystee, Black Cindy, Watson and Alison Abdullah, having an awkward handshake with Taystee and sharing similar interests, then she went on helping to collect the "Bribes" provided by the governor. Which they then set on fire in front of the prison. In Tied to the Tracks, she was part of negotiation talks with Fig, however, that all goes downhill after Fig finds out that Humphrey has been shot. After Piscatella enters the prison, she ends up being kidnapped along with Nicky, Big Boo, Alex and Flores. After Alex and Piper go through the Piscatella's kidnapping together, as well as him breaking her arm, she comes to a realization that she wants to stay with Alex for the rest of her life, and proposes.

As for the even bigger cliffhanger, a newly engaged Piper and Alex stood hand-in-hand with Red, Nicky, Gloria, Taystee, Cindy, Suzanne, Blanca and Frieda when armed officers blew up the entrance to the pool area.

Season Six[]

Piper in max

Piper has been moved to Litchfield Max following the events of Season 5.

Once at Max, Piper tries to find Alex, she appears on Suzanne's fantasy of Jeopardy, where she gets all the answers wrong. Later, Piper misinterprets a message from Red and thinks that Alex is dead. In her interview with the FBI, Piper unconsciously blames Red, as she thinks that Red's actions led to the death of Alex. Creech can first be seen in line for the pharmacy with Akers. When Piper attempts to speak to Lorna, who is ahead, Akers stops her and the two mock Piper's face and believe she is a drug addict, while Piper talks to Lorna.

After pleading guilty to Inciting the Riot and receiving an additional six months on her sentence, Piper is taken to Gen. Pop. where her roommate is Madison who has decided to make Piper's life miserable. Piper is lying in bed, depressed when Alex arrives at her cell and pretends to have lost memory as a prank. Piper kisses her until Ginger tells them to rap it up. Badison asks Akers to swap with Alex Vause so that she can be beside Piper, the two states this isn't necessary, but Badison pushes. Akers is disappointed ("I'm The Talking Ass")

Piper is sleeping when she wakes up with cheese in her nose as a prank. Badison laughs and then asks her to fill her commissary as payment for moving Alex next door, saying Stella told her about Piper's wealth. Piper goes out to Alex and tells her that it's a terrible prank, and about the extortion. Alex tells her it's just her trying to establish dominance. Later Piper is told to begin an altercation with Maria Ruiz in exchange for her tooth back, doing so and calling her a “stupid dumb dumb.” ("Mischief Mischief")

Piper is in line with Alex who is waiting to see the gynecologist. Piper says that she isn't in line she's just waiting with Alex. She says that she's waiting until she gets out to go to the doctor in nine months. Alex and Piper are having lunch while Piper tells Alex about what she did. Alex tells her that she needs to not give a shit about all that and just be there with Alex. Piper tells her that they have a wedding to plan. Alex says in four years but Piper says she can't wait that long. Alex doesn't want a prison wedding but Piper manages to convince her. Piper realizes what she has done to Red as Red is assigned to C-Block. She and Alex go over and apologize but Red ignores them. They state that Red can still talk to them as they still consider her a friend. Later, Piper begins to cry to Alex as Creech has defecated on her bed. To cheer her up, Alex makes her take a quiz which leads to Piper deciding to try writing a memoir, much like Piper Kerman. ("State of the Uterus")

Piper arrives at the library and asks if they have any memoirs. Initially, she refuses to answer as Piper's C-Block defecated in their laundry. However, Piper apologizes on behalf and states that she didn't participate. Adeola then says that there are no memoirs and says there are law books. Piper says she didn't murder someone to which Adeola replied "Charlize Theron" Piper comes back asking about some photos she found and Adeola explains a cameraman used to come around. She states that all the good photos for 'porn' have been taken and 30 years the blocks had peace. Piper thanks her for her help and we are shown Adeola's book that she's reading titled "Murder v. Self Defence" Later, she tells Alex of this plan who is reluctant. Badison comes over to Alex and says she needs to speak to her in private. Piper says that anything she can say to Alex can be said to her but Alex whispers to her to keep enemies close, to which piper responds "Charlize Theron" (quoting Adeola) Alex does not understand and walks off.("Changing Winds")

Piper approaches Luschek and blackmails him into making kickball happen with the knowledge of the mobile phones ("Gordons")

This gives her the opportunity to start petitioning for a kickball team. Piper approaches Carol and asks her if she wants to sign up for kickball. She refuses but gives Piper permission to ask others. At first, Piper struggles to get people to sign her petition, with only 3, including a forged one of Alex and Beth's, as she says during lunch with Dwight, Zirconia, Gloria, and Alex. She tries to encourage them but they are busy. However, they do encourage her to end gang divisions. She later attends Prayer service with Beth and she meets Maria, where the two apologize and Maria signs and seemingly the rest of the church does too. Deitland arrives with a book and gives it to Piper, Piper exclaims as she has gotten 16 signatures, Badison shows Carol who responds by signing up more C-Block members as she sees D-Block have all signed up. ("Break the String")

Piper and the C-Block players are outside in the yard training. Badison purposely allows the ball to get stuck and so Piper has to get it, she sees the original kickball area and so asks Luschek to allow them to play there, after being backed up by Badison he agrees. Piper enters B-Dorm with Dixon to find some more players. There, she meets Pennsatucky, a former enemy who decides to join and she then focuses on Suzanne. Suzanne is so boggled with Frieda's manipulation that she believes Piper is trying to steal her place in B-Dorm and kill her. Piper assures her this is not her cause and that Pinks are safe, khakis and blues aren't. They also reminisce about Season 1 when Piper was chased by Suzanne on the track, and Suzanne calls her Dandelion and states she will always love Piper. Suzanne signs up. Later, Suzanne hits a shot and makes a home run, which Piper and her celebrate. Madison and Piper both vie for the captain's position, with Pennsatucky vouching for Piper and Nicole Eckelcamp vouching for Badison. Ultimately Piper gets nominated for it. ("Chocolate Chip Nookie")

Piper is a good captain and makes them do exercises. Badison is angered by this and ends up vomiting due to all the exercises. Piper asks if she's okay while Badison's girls laugh at her. Alex and Piper talk and Alex says she is a psycho. Piper returns to her cell to an upset Badison who puts gum in her hair and suggests she'll cause her more trouble. ("Well This Took a Dark Turn")

Piper later goes to the salon and is stopped along the way and gets strip-searched by Artesian McCullough when she sees drugs in her shoe (in order to extend her stay in prison). Luckily, Piper isn't caught with the drugs. Piper runs into the salon where her and Taystee talk. Piper says "fucking Badison" and Taystee thinks she means that the hair is bad, and tells her to shave one side because that's a lesbian thing. Piper asks why do people always mess with her and Taystee tells her that they don't see Piper when they look at her, they see her privilege and education and wealth. Taystee says outside she is messed with like how Piper is messed within Prison. Hellman makes Taystee leave the salon. Piper tells the hairdresser to cut it off. ("Well This Took a Dark Turn")

Piper arrives at kickball where Badison and Akers are seemingly playing basketball with the players. Badison thought Piper would be going to SHU and is annoyed. Suzanne states she's happy that Piper's back as things were getting weird. Piper makes them do exercises again, but Badison refuses, staring coldly at Piper. She suddenly hits Alana on her way past, causing her to be knocked out (and lose her sense of smell completely). Badison also pretends that she got hurt and pleads to Ginger and Alvarez to shut down kickball. They tell her they're not going to ruin a good thing over one incident. ("Well This Took a Dark Turn")

Alex talks to Piper about business school, saying she submitted her request. Piper tells her about what Badison did and comes to the conclusion that she needs to go to AdSeg for protection from Badison so she doesn't get her date stolen. They are given shots by Stefanovic, with Alex mocking that the COs are very trustworthy. Piper decides to go to the PolyCon Video's auditions to avoid Badison. Piper approaches Ginger and tells her about Badison's abuse, and (due to having Piper in Fantasy inmate), she doesn't care and states that she should fend for herself. She tells CO Rick Hopper about the drugs and Madison's constant harassment. She promises to tell him where the drugs are coming from when she finds out. He decides to put her in the inmates to get an early release, putting her from 83 to 1, despite Hellman's (fake) report. This was because he was the drug importer. Badison smiles at her because of Carol and Alex's secret deal. ("Double Trouble")

While this was happening, Alex has made a deal with Carol to protect her from Madison in exchange for Alex working for her. ("Double Trouble")

Alex enters Piper's cell and states she gets barely any sleep. Piper tells her to try 'Progressive Muscle Relaxation' and explains it. Piper invites her to cuddle, and Alex agrees. Hellman calls them to come out and they hide under the covers. He gives them both shots and says it isn't a slumber party. He takes Piper to her Case Manager. Piper wonders what's happening and asks Sophia, who also doesn't know. She assumes she got extra time. However, Piper ends up being granted early release. Piper is on the toilet when Alex comes into her cell. She states she knows that Piper doesn't like being interupted while on the toilet. Piper stops her and tells her that she is getting released. Alex is shocked and dissapointed (as she thought they'd have nine more months together). However, she begins to make Piper excited about the future and feels happy for her. Piper is happy but has doubts, and is motivated by Blanca. ("Be Free")

She and Alex are walking down the corridor when Hellman appears. They hide and turn out to be in a room where Luschek has granted Nicky to marry Piper and Alex. She screams in delight when she hears Nicky and hugs her. They are getting married and are shocked when Lorna brings out a shiv that's old, new, borrowed and blue. Alex states her vows are to make up for the evil choice she made (naming Piper) in little ways each day. They kiss and Nicky stops them saying they're not supposed to kiss yet, much to the annoyance of Lorna, who is weeping, calling her a monster Piper begins saying her vow which is to wait for Alex. Flaca and Black Cindy come in and witness the rest, hugging Piper. Nicky gives the rings and allows them to kiss. Nicky, Alex, Lorna, and Piper agree that Red would love it and wish she was there. ("Be Free")

Piper is in the cell block again when she's called for kickball. Creech asks if she's coming and Piper tells her she's getting out. Creech congratulates her, and Nicole Eckelcamp asks if she can have Piper's conditioner. Piper tells her no as Akers states that it is better that Badison is captain (despite voting Piper captain). Piper is called again for early release by Ginger and Badison approaches her saying that she would've got her a present, but Piper is "a stupid bitch [she] never liked" Piper and Alex share a passionate kiss as Ginger calls her a final time. Piper quickly leaves before Copeland gets angry. ("Be Free")

Piper and Blanca walk together out and Blanca tries to cheer her up again. She is worried when Blanca is separated into a line and heads out a different door. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Piper, Daya congratulates Piper for getting out and reminds everyone that Piper is the reason they're playing kickball. As she is walking out of prison along with her fellow early releases, she stops to watch the girls rejoicing over their kickball game on the field. She smiles to herself as she greets Cal outside the prison. The final episode ends with Cal asking, “So, what are you gonna do now?” as Piper stares off into the distance. ("Be Free")

Life after Litchfield[]

Season Seven[]

Piper has been released from prison and now lives with Cal and Neri. She works in a Thai restaurant, a place she once berated. She has finally been given permission by her Parole Officer to visit Alex, her wife. She pleads to her boss to let her off two days so she can visit Alex. He agrees but only if she can clean dishes on Saturday. Piper arrives at her dad's accountancy firm later on, where he is not impressed with her. She asks for a loan to go see Alex, as Piper had to spend all her saved up money for the bus ticket on probation fees and rent instead. Piper’s dad is reluctant but ultimately gives in, and tells her to collect the money on her way out.

Piper is seen trying on a few clothes whilst getting ready to see Alex, but accidentally makes a lot of noise which wakes up Cal and Neri’s baby, much to their annoyance. Whilst on the bus, Piper receives a phone call from Cal, informing her that she’s fired from the Thai restaurant she’s been working at, claiming that her boss liked her but scheduling was too difficult. Piper arrives at Litchfield Max and is ecstatic to see Alex again. They discuss Piper’s drive up, her outfit and how Alex is doing. When Alex tries to tell Piper about what she saw on Nicky’s phone, Piper gets worried and claims Alex shouldn’t be around phones in prison as it could land her in more trouble, to which Alex agrees but sarcastically calms her down. Both Piper and Alex notice the fact that the conversation isn’t flowing. When Piper walks to the bus station, she notices a family next to her speaking in a foreign language. When she asks what the mother said, she gets told she said ‘it’s all different now’, to which Piper glances away likely reminiscing on her recent conversation with Alex.

Piper begins looking after Neri's baby after she is unemployed. The other mothers love her, until one day her parole officer shows up, scaring them away. Her parole officer urges her to find a new job on the same day. Defeated, she decides to ask her father if she can work at his company. Despite being reluctant, he lets her work at his company. Piper begins working for her father, who makes her re-digitize her old files. She is very effective, but has a meltdown when he complains about her wasting pens. She also feels out of place around her new colleagues.

In the meantime, as Alex got in trouble upon trying to frame Hellman, Alex calls Piper and claims that their relationship can only work if they’re transparent with each other, but Piper ultimately tells Alex that she trusts her and distracts a sad Alex with telling her about having been babysitting recently. Later on, Alex calls Piper again at her work, and tells her about what happened with Hellman and McCullough, leaving Piper horrified. However, Alex decides to change the subject and asks her about her new work instead, with Piper claiming it’s so lame, and Piper also tells Alex she can’t visit her because her father won’t allow it. Alex jokingly brushes it off, claiming since she has her own phone now at least they can at least call each other.

One evening at work, Piper impulsively decides to eat the cake that her colleagues got for another colleague and drinks one of her colleague’s alchohol.

Piper suggests to Cal to take a day off, like they used to as little kids when they had the day off because of a snowy day. They went to get a bloody mary with burgers, when Cal proposes the idea to take edibles. Piper agreed to it and they went to an ice cream shop as they were high. However, when Piper has to go to her probation officer afterwards and her blood test came back unclear )indicating she has been on substances), her probation officer scolds her and tells her she has to adjust her ways if she doesn’t want to end up incarcerated again. Much to Piper’s relief, her probation officer forces her to attend ten AA meetings at a halfway house as punishment.

When Piper visits Alex, Alex is angered upon hearing about Piper almost violating her parole. Realizing that Piper misses the touch of Alex, Alex advises her to have sex with other people because it will be hard to wait for three more years. Piper rejects this, claiming she hasn’t been in the mood anyways, but Alex tells her to think about it. Later, Piper seems to be constantly masturbating after Alex sent her a video of her moaning. This annoys Cal and Neri, who advise her to have one-night stands instead. Piper eventually does, after spotting a man in the gym. She has sex with him, but does not finish and later uses his toothbrush as a vibrator. Again, at one of the AA meetings she’s attending because of violating her probation, she has a one-night stand with a woman but also doesn't enjoy it, and proceeds to leave.

Piper goes on a trip with Neri and her friends, including Zelda. Piper gets asked by one of Neri’s friends if she’s even allowed to hold a weapon, after finding out she’s a convicted felon. Piper isn’t really good at the hunting retreat, but ends up befriending another friend of Neri’s called Zelda, who she’s bunked with. During the hunting retreat they accidentally kill a sheep, who has a fetus. Piper and Zelda bury it. At one point, Piper tells Zelda that she’s been in prison before. She assures Zelda she’s not dangerous or anything, but tells her about what happened with carrying the drug money a decade ago, and tells her that during her stay in prison she got to know parts of herself she didn’t even know were there. Zelda is supportive, much to Piper’s surprise.

Piper begins hanging out with Zelda, going to yoga together. Zelda encourages Piper to own up to her experience as a former inmate, and gives her the courage to eventually tell everyone at her work that she has been in prison before, with her colleagues being surprisingly supportive of her, but her father remains disturbed. Piper ends up confronting him at last, and through a conversation about the past they start bonding again. Piper visits Alex, who she tells about the hunting retreat and how liberated she feels ever since coming clean to everyone around her about having been in prison before. Alex asks her about who Zelda is and Piper claims she’s just Neri’s friend. Piper asks Alex if McCullough is still making her sell for her, and Alex claims she isn’t.

Piper and Zelda arranged going to a dinner with Larry and Polly, and going to a ball. They almost kiss, but Piper wants to stay loyal to Alex, which Zelda understands. However, Artesian McCullough sees them and goes up to Piper, saying that she's keeping Alex from loving her instead. Piper threatens to call the cops. Artesian reveals her and Alex's affair and leaves. Piper runs to Zelda's apartment and hooks up with her.

The next morning, Piper wakes up and proceeds to go downstairs, where she’s met with Zelda. They talk and decide to look at the view from her apartment together, but it isn’t long until their conversation is interrupted by Alex suddenly calling. Shocked, Piper accidentally spills her drink on the floor which she’s very sorry for, but Zelda laughs it off and tells her it’s alright. Piper rushes back upstairs to pick up the phone. Alex tells Piper that she had no idea that McCullough was going to go to her place and bother her the previous evening, to which a frustrated Piper responds that she’s aware of their affair. Alex responds back by asking Piper if she isn’t with Zelda herself, and when Piper refuses to answer, Alex is fed up and tells her that Piper must come visit her in person to discuss this further. An angered Piper hangs up and throws her phone on the floor out of frustration.

Due to issues with the bus, Piper arrives late for visitation which reduces the amount of time Piper and Alex have to talk as the visitation area is closing soon. Alex asks Piper how many times she’s been intimate with Zelda, to which Piper responds that it was just once. Piper asks Alex how many times she and McCullough were intimate, but ends up telling Alex she doesn’t want to know. Instead she asks Alex if any of the stories regarding the selling phone chargers were true, to which Alex respond they were. Alex claims that the reason she cheated on Piper with McCullough was because she wanted her power back, but ultimately tells Piper she has no actual feelings for McCullough. However, when Alex asks if Piper has any feelings for Zelda, Piper claims she can’t lie to her, which leaves both affected. Just as Piper wants to elaborate, the phones are cut off. Alex walks off but Piper still tells her over the window that she could never stop loving her. Piper is later seen crying whilst waiting for the bus, so bad that another person waiting at the bus stop asks her if she’s okay, to which Piper responds she’s alright and proceeds to step in the bus when it arrives.

Piper visits Alex who thinks they should break up as Alex believes she's keeping Piper from experiences. Piper cries as Alex reveals she's being transferred. Piper is invited to go to Northampton with Zelda. She arrives at Larry's, crying and wondering what she should do after being broken up with. Larry looks at it psychologically and tries to define Piper, which she rejects saying he doesn't know her anymore. He states he bets she'll go after Alex. Piper does, presumably moving to Ohio and getting a job in Starbucks. Piper and Alex have visitation and look happy as the season ends.

Family[]

Friends[]

  • Nicky Nichols - Nicky takes an instant liking to Piper and is one of Piper's closest allies in Litchfield. She has no problem talking about things that make Piper uncomfortable, such as her relationship with Alex. In fact, Nicky is one of the only people who Piper is vulnerable and honest with, especially when it comes to her problems. She's also not afraid to risk getting shots to help Piper and is the only one seen helping her when she was forced to stand on the table for an indefinite time, showing just how much she cares and how close the two are.
  • Red - (strained) Initially Red is indifferent to Piper until Piper unknowingly insults her food. Red starves her out for disrespecting her food for a while until Piper creates a lotion made of pepper juice for her aching back, which mends their relationship. After Piper returned from Chicago, she ended up sharing the same bunk as Red. They had a very rocky start at first, but they ended up becoming friends, as they started to bond and relate more. However, when she lied to Red about her store's success, this caused a lot of conflict in their relationship. Red was not afraid to reveal Piper's faults to her. They made up over a business deal in which Red helped Piper's pantie-business grow in exchange for a percentage of the profits. However, Piper accidentally betrayed Red due to thinking Red's actions killed Alex. Although, it does not seem as if Red is very angry at Piper after that when Piper apologizes.
  • Lorna Morello - Lorna showed Piper the ropes when she first arrived at Litchfield and gives her advice on prison life during Season One. Both of them are connected to Nicky, which means that they spend a lot of time and usually eat lunch together. Lorna is also one of the few people that is invited to Alex and Piper's prison wedding during Season Six. In It Was the Change, Lorna expresses her sadness about Piper being transferred to Virginia, to which Piper replies; "You were the first person that was nice to me when I got here. I was really scared. You made me feel like it was gonna be okay", which makes Lorna teary-eyed.
  • Polly Harper (former best friend) - Polly was Piper's best friend from college. They had a soap business together which collapsed after Piper's incarceration and Polly's pregnancy. Eventually, Polly gets together with Larry, which causes friction in their friendship. They don't appear to have spoken since the end of Season Two.
  • Claudette Pelage - Miss Claudette was Piper's bunkmate during the first season. At first, she appears cold and highly concerned with the cleanliness of their bunk, but after Piper stands up to her, recounting just how tough prison has been for her, she seems to respect her more. Their friendship falters when Larry recounts how Piper used to think that Claudette would murder her in her sleep on live radio.
  • Taystee - Taystee happily sports a lock of Piper's blond hair. When she violates her parole purposely, she is assigned to be Piper's new roommate after Miss Claudette is taken to Max. She helped Piper deal with the threats that Pennsatucky presented to her at the end of Season One. In Season Five, Piper starts helping Taystee during the negotiations of the riot.

  • Larry Bloom - Although not together they are still very good friends.

Enemies[]

  • Pennsatucky (former) - Initially, Pennsatucky is friendly to Piper until Piper 'disrespects' her, which sends her on a quest to murder her. In their confrontation during the Christmas play, Piper angrily punches Pennsatucky repeatedly to the extent that she needs oral surgery for new teeth, something which she asked of Piper when she was elected a WAC member. Because of her new teeth, it seems as if Pennsatucky has gotten over their past conflicts and happily hugs Piper on Caputo's orders.
  • Healy (former) - Initially, Healy is lenient towards Piper and offers his assistance to her in the belief that "she's not like the other girls." When he learns of Piper's sexual history, he becomes more hostile towards her, going to the point of locking her in solitary just because she and Alex were dancing too close for his comfort. He then calls Larry and informs him of Piper's affair, leading to the breaking off of their engagement. Later on, in Season Two, Healy helps Piper receive furlough for her Grandmothers funeral. Later he allows her to start a newsletter and they seem to bond over this. He also puts Alex Vause on her call list and allows her to visit Piper, which shows that either he is naive enough to believe that Piper has rejected the "Lesbian Lifestyle", or that he's become more lenient when it comes to her preferences.
  • Alex Vause (former) - Alex and Piper dated for a while during Season One, with Alex flying Piper all over the world, but break up after Piper feels used by her girlfriend. They meet again in Season One, and later begin an affair behind Larry's back. Their relationship is rocky and built on mistrust, as Alex named Piper an accessory to her crimes (which got Piper sent to prison in the first place), and Piper cheats on her with Stella. They made up completely as of Season Four.
  • Stella Carlin - Although business partners in Piper's panty business - and later, lovers - Stella betrayed Piper by stealing all the money she made from her business. Piper got revenge by planting contraband in Stella's bunk and got her sent to Max.
  • Maria Ruiz (civil) - Piper told Piscatella about Maria's gang and business, extending Maria's sentence. Maria responded by having Piper's arm branded with a swastika. In season six, the two begin acting friendly towards each other as Maria signs Piper's kickball petition.

  • Piscatella
  • Linda Ferguson
  • Artesian McCullough
  • Madison Murphy

Novel[]

In an interview with a YouTube channel known as 'HeyUGuys,' Schilling explains that the show is not trying to 'impersonate' the author. Piper Chapman is an individual character who does not solidly resemble Kerman and her experience in prison; however, as the series was inspired by her book, some of the events in the series are similar to those that take place in her publication.
