Biography[]
Before Red's Incarceration[]
Nadezhda and Red are seen leaving their service in a Soviet factory, where Dmitri (Red's future husband) also works. Nadezhda opposes Red's relationship with Dmitri, and then invites her to a university party, and shows her a hidden pair of jeans, which are banned by the government.
Nadezhda introduces Red to Pavel, host of the party, and then she stays with Kostya, the boy responsible for the jeans. Nadezhda and Red begin to work in the distribution of jeans, even though it is illegal, and Red and Pavel begin a relationship.
One night, Nadezhda interrupts a meeting between Red and Pavel, and informs that Kostya is missing and fears that he has been captured by the police. Later, Nadezhda also disappears, which Red first notices by her absense from work and her mother's claim that she is not home.
Red breaks up with Pavel after he decides that destroying the jeans was the best option to get rid of the problems, instead of continuing to fight for what they believe in. Red, disillusioned with the cowardice of Pavel, leaves him and subsequently marries Dmitri, as he can exploit a legal loophole; that the USA is accepting the immigration of Jews and he can gain false papers. ("The Tightening")
The state of Nadezhda is unknown and no one has been heard from her since her disappearance.
