Lauren Morelli is a television writer for the Netflix comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black.
She grew up in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Winchester Thurston School and studied dance at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, until a back injury ended her career in dance
After the end of her dance career, Morelli was inspired to begin writing. She began with short stories until she landed her first professional writing position on Orange Is the New Black. She was made "lead writer" for two episodes of the first season Morelli has also worked as a playwright: her short play "Roach & Rat" was featured in Lesser America's production of Just Right Just Now in New York.
Morelli struggled with coming out as a lesbian. In 2014, she filed for divorce of her husband of 2 years. On the fourth of October, 2016, she became engaged to Samira Wiley (Poussey Washington). She has said that she fell in love with Samira while seeing her on set and has dated her since she has came out. The two are married, as of 2017.
